New Mattress Adaptation Period: How to Speed Up This Process

Published by Leafsleep on 26th Sep 2023

We know that when changing mattresses, users often go through a period of adaptation which, for many people, can be uncomfortable.

The first nights on a new mattress aren't always as wonderful as you might think. After leaving behind an old mattress - which often caused us discomfort due to flooding or deformations - we expect to sleep from the first day "like on a cloud". And although this happens in many cases, sometimes the body needs a little more time to get used to the new rest.

What if it hasn't happened since the first night?

This is also completely normal. The adaptation period can vary between 1 and 10 nights of use, and even last a little longer in some cases. That's why we've prepared this article with practical tips to help you adapt more quickly to your new mattress.

See some tips below:

1 - Moving from a very soft or low mattress to a firm one

It's one of the most common situations: people who were dissatisfied with their old bland or deformed mattress and are now looking for more firmness and support.
However, the first night can be a bit tricky, as the body needs time to adjust. Imagine that you've spent a long time not exercising and, when you come back, you feel sharp: something similar happens with the mattress.

The old mattress adapted to your pressure points and the body was used to these deformations. With a new, firm and uniform mattress, it's normal to feel some discomfort at first until your body adapts.

Our advice: during the first few days, try sleeping with a duvet folded under the blanket, and unfold it little by little as you get used to it.

2 - Switch to a mattress with the same level of firmness

You might ask yourself: "If I change a firm mattress for one with the same density, will I adapt to it instantly?".
The reality is that not necessarily. Over time, the foam in an old mattress loses its initial firmness due to humidity and sweat minerals, which cause oxidation and degradation of the material.

Our advice: applies the same trick as the duvet for a more comfortable transition.

3 - Moving from a firm mattress to a softer one

Although it may seem unusual, this change also requires adaptation. In this case, not because of joint pain, but because of the lack of habit of sleeping on a more enveloping and soft surface.

Our advice: during the first few nights, sleep on your side, in a fetal position and carrying a pillow. This posture helps to maintain optimum body alignment and reduces the possibility of illness.
